As a decorative artist interested craftsmanship I spend many hours researching and studying art history. Much of today’s modern art and architecture will often incorporate elements taken from old world decorative finishes such as wood textures, metal leaf application, murals, stone and patina. We love the way these relics age naturally. Such as a old stone wall or aged cracked plaster revealing the construction beneath or even an old coin that has more value if it isn’t ever cleaned. Think Restoration Hardware, traditional architectural artwork etc.
This work of art we are discussing was inspired by the process of layering mixed media to create a stunning and magical visual designed to stir powerful emotions. The layering of paint and metal leaf is multidimensional, sparkling yet deep and mysterious. The result is a beautiful and unforgettable conversation piece. Here is a simplified explanation of how the work was created.
1.

I created a stone effect on canvas with an acrylic base coat topped with oil glaze for a soft smooth stone like appearance.
2.

I added actual silver and gold leaf in a random and broken way to look aged and layered with a beautiful and natural pattern complimenting and harmonizing with the stone effect underneath.
3.

Added more depth, darkness and color with another wash of artists oil paints such as burnt umber and cerulean blue.
Its beautiful, I love it!
